Understanding and implementing the digital twin and mastering its complexity

A collaboration between 3DSE and PROSTEP AG

Companies in all industries must transform digitally in order to remain competitive in a world that is becoming increasingly digital. In addition to the right mindset, the foundation of this digital transformation is the consistent use of digital technologies to increase operational efficiency and the full exploitation of the potential inherent in data to develop new business models.
An important lever for increasing value creation is the digital twin. It connects the digital world of product development and production planning with the real world of production and operations. Digital twins are therefore at the heart of many digitalisation initiatives across all industrial sectors.

This white paper explains the organisational and technical foundations of a future-proof digital twin concept. It summarises the key findings of a comprehensive concept study on the digital twin, which the consulting firms 3DSE and PROSTEP developed together with Airbus Defence & Space. The starting point was the idea of positioning the digital twin within the existing PLM landscape. However, the study showed that a different type of IT environment with additional PLM capabilities is required in order to provide and manage the different manifestations of the digital twin. The requirements for the digital twin may be more complex in aerospace and defence than in other industries, but in principle they can also be applied to companies in other sectors.
