As a global nonprofit organization, INCOSE is at the forefront of advancing the principles and practices for successful systems implementation. It serves as a global hub for systems engineering professionals and offers opportunities for continuing education, networking, and career development. Its multifaceted mission includes the goal of being the world’s most trusted authority in systems engineering, expanding both INCOSE and the systems engineering community, developing the systems engineering workforce, and striving for operational excellence.
INCOSE is on an ambitious journey into the future. With the release of the SE Vision 2035, it has set itself a dynamic and ongoing goal that requires both the right tools and actions to bring it to life. The FuSE (Future of Systems Engineering) initiative serves as the vehicle for realizing this vision. However, achieving this vision is not a task that INCOSE can accomplish alone. As a volunteer-based organization, INCOSE is driven by the intrinsic motivation of its members—a dedicated group of systems engineering experts worldwide.
INCOSE recognized the need for external expertise to support this transformation and entered into a partnership with 3DSE. 3DSE helped INCOSE transform the FuSE project into a mature initiative focused on community engagement and involvement in FuSE. This collaborative approach was key to the project’s success.
Together, we established FuSE’s organizational structure and work processes based on an inspiring mission and vision, as well as the key success factors.
These efforts did not go unnoticed. As part of four main tracks—Vision & Roadmaps, Foundations, Methodologies, and Application Extensions—FuSE had the opportunity to be represented at major INCOSE events around the world in 2023.
Thanks to 3DSE’s support, our engagement with the community was extremely effective, and we were able to achieve comprehensive results. The key results achieved across the four areas were:
- Vision and Roadmaps: Description and formulation of the activities necessary to put the vision into practice
- Fundamentals: Initial Experiments in the Scientific Description of Systems Engineering Using “The First Law of Complexity”
- Methodologies: A clear set of current obstacles that must be overcome, and the methods required to advance systems engineering
- Application Extensions: Identification and Description of a Common Set of Values That Integrates Systems Engineering into Various Application Areas
These results form the basis for a coherent outline of the next steps.
The project attracted global participation, with over 1,000 participants from the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Oceania, representing more than 30 sister organizations.
This partnership has played a crucial role in ensuring the project’s success in realizing the SE Vision 2035 and has paved the way for the new, expanded full-time staff to begin their work.
The journey of INCOSE and 3DSE does not end here. As a member of INCOSE, 3DSE will continue to actively participate in and contribute to the realization of the SE Vision 2035.
