Modular Product Development Is Key to Boosting Efficiency and Customer Value

As industrial companies face multiple challenges—such as volatile markets, inflationary pressure, and customers demanding greater value—they are seeking ways to improve their efficiency throughout the value chain. Increased competition from new industry players, along with technological changes and new options, is shifting buying power to customers, who are demanding higher value and greater customization in their products to meet their needs.

Modularization has the potential to be integrated into product development with a reasonable ramp-up period, while demonstrating its effectiveness throughout the value chain. In this way, the organization’s goals can range from optimizing a subsystem to support multiple applications, to creating the right architecture for a product to manage internal versus external variance, to establishing a long-term modular architecture approach for the product portfolio.

Modularization in and of itself is not a new concept. However, when trying to enhance their modularization capabilities, companies still face practical challenges: Engineering leads and engineers are busy with their R&D projects; product development processes and procedures do not yet incorporate modularization; and the modularization principles known from theory do not align with the way the company operates.

While the benefits of modularization—in terms of R&D efficiency, economies of scale along the value chain, optimization of variants (internal vs. external complexity), and increased reuse—are generally understood, companies still need to put these principles into practice and integrate them into their product development operations.

Therefore, a customized Modular Architecture Development Process (see project example) has proven to be an effective approach for companies. 3DSE provides the outside-in expertise needed to customize the process and helps companies apply it in R&D projects.

The modularization process seamlessly integrates with and enhances the existing product development process, which serves as the backbone for implementing modularization in R&D projects. At the same time, modularization should not be viewed as an additional burden—it creates an opportunity to get the product architecture right from the very beginning.

While engineering is the key driver of modularization, its “internal customers” span the entire value chain: For example, the purchasing department can reduce procurement costs as the “zoo of variants” is optimized. Production benefits from reduced capital expenditures and simplified assembly lines. Therefore, modularization is best approached as a cross-functional effort that brings together representatives from various departments. In the example project, 3DSE supported customers in integrating these various perspectives and optimizing module variants from both technical and financial standpoints.

In a company where modularization has not yet become part of the “corporate DNA,” management support, communication, and training will ensure a successful implementation.
