{"id":15055,"date":"2024-06-27T10:49:57","date_gmt":"2024-06-27T10:49:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/3dse.com\/thyssenkrupp-marine-systems\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T12:53:38","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T12:53:38","slug":"thyssenkrupp-marine-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/3dse.com\/en\/thyssenkrupp-marine-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tk MS) is a leading European company in the field of marine systems with a comprehensive product portfolio that includes frigates and corvettes, non-nuclear submarines, naval command, control, and sensor systems, as well as unmanned and autonomous surface and underwater vehicles.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 1960, tk MS has delivered more than 170 submarines to over 20 navies worldwide and supports its customers throughout the entire product life cycle\u2014from design, development, production, and system integration to in-service support.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The award phase of a procurement program for the construction of new submarines began upon receipt of the Request for Quotation (RfQ).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be considered for the final selection process, the tkMS proposal had to be submitted by the deadline and not only be technically compelling but also, among other things, take into account an industrial partnership.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Objective<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To meet the Navy\u2019s needs, an existing tk MS submarine design was used as a basis and further developed for special long-range missions. For the more than 200 engineers, this meant adhering to a specified product strategy and designing new, innovative technologies and systems.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the consistent reuse of artifacts (requirements, specifications, and design documents), the resources made available to the engineering team for preparing the proposal documents were to be utilized as effectively as possible within six months. Therefore, in collaboration with 3DSE, a requirements model tailored to the bid project was set up in Doors Next Generation (DNG) with the following goal:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>to enable the reuse of artifacts (including requirements, SSS, SSDD)<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>to establish a single source of truth that is used by all engineering subject matter experts involved in the proposal preparation process<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>to ensure clear traceability from the RfQ requirements to the proposal documents and supplier specifications<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>To quickly assess changes to RfQ requirements made by the Department of Defense and determine the implications for the proposal documents to be prepared<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The ability to create bid documents directly in DNG and export them with the click of a button<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a first step, the requirements for the engineering proposal documents\u2014the Compliance Matrix, Verification Matrix, and Technical Specification\u2014were identified, reviewed, and evaluated, and appropriate workflows for creating these documents were developed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To populate the Compliance Response and the Verification Matrix, the necessary data was captured in DNG and exported in a format that allowed it to be imported directly into the formats specified in the RfQ (XML and Excel).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To create the technical specifications, a system breakdown was first defined. After the engineering team evaluated the artifacts for reusability, they were migrated to the requirements model, linked to the customer requirements, and further developed by the engineering team.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To ensure that the bid documents were delivered on time, transparency regarding the current processing status had to be maintained at all times so that appropriate corrective measures could be taken early on. To this end, a DNG Reporting Cockpit with various analysis views was created, along with an error heatmap that shows whether the attributes of the stakeholders and system requirements have been populated according to the specifications. In addition, customized reports were introduced for the primary system managers, highlighting the processing status of the technical specifications and gaps in the requirements model (e.g., missing links between system requirements and system elements).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DNG Reporting Cockpit was complemented by a support and empowerment concept tailored to the engineers\u2019 needs, as well as a user guide on Confluence. This three-pronged approach played a key role in ensuring that all engineering documents could be provided on time in accordance with the RfQ requirements.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe workflows and reporting dashboards we set up together with 3DSE have helped me do the right things the right way,\u201d says Christian Knop, subproject
